Abstraction
While I find joy in overcoming my fear of portraiture, I savor the challenge that abstraction forces upon me to work in the moment. Whether watercolor on paper or acrylic on canvas, my abstracts are never predetermined and are often an experimental process. Breaking through my comfort zone of planning every detail and completely letting go instead, has its successes and failures. It is a learning process, but I enjoy growing with each of my works.
The process begins solely with an emotion, song or color scheme (often influenced by emotion), and the rest is guided moment to moment and letting ideas flow out of me on to the substrate. This process is completely opposite of my portraiture which is another avenue to express my emotions or ideas.

Acrylic and Multimedia Abstraction
I love working with Acrylics and multi-media as they allow me to create physical layers for depth and three-dimensional textures. Recently I have been experimenting with different acrylic mediums and incorporating powdered dyes and interference paints. Utilizing the dyes layed into the medium adds an aspect of natural reaction, which is out of my control.
I enjoy the extra layer that the tactile aspect adds to the experience of my pieces. I also have learned as a sculpture/ceramics major, that touch is an incredible sense and can sometimes lead to the biggest discussions. The feel of something can evoke emotions and elicit memories for the viewer. From personal experience, I have also known some people who are only able to experience life through their fingers, and as a painter, this is my way of giving them the opportunity of engaging with art.
