Portraiture
Prior to my movement from three-dimensional work in college, the concept of portrait work and realism intimidated me. Fortunately for me my first painting professor, Peter Barnett, asked a very important question, “What have you never painted or avoided painting before?” His question guided me to the realization of my fear for painting people. Upon recognition of this fear, I spent that entire summer in independent study painting people with his guidance. Although it was a challenge at first, I hoped to further my skills in photo-realism and painting with practice. People continue to be an amazing subject matter for me, as I strive to create a conversation from just the expression on their face or even just their eyes.
Below are examples of my portrait work with mediums ranging from pencil/graphite to acrylic. Typically, when working on a portrait, I work from a photograph. This allows me the time to structure the composition and the capability of ensuring that I keep the correct proportion.
My newest series of pencil/graphite, watercolor, and pastel are people who have influenced me over the past year or so. All of the subjects have struggled in their life, overcoming obstacles and eventually using their influence to encourage those around them to never give up on their dreams.
